Specialty periodontics and dental implants for the Inland Northwest.
A referral-grade surgical practice covering gums, bone, and tooth replacement, led by board-certified periodontists, including one of the few specialists nationally dual-trained in periodontics and orthodontics.
A specialist your dentist trusts for the hard cases.
When a problem goes deeper than a routine cleaning, your general dentist refers you here. Here is what that means.
What periodontists treat
Gum disease (gingivitis through advanced periodontitis), receding gums, bone loss around teeth, and the placement and maintenance of dental implants. These are surgical-specialty conditions, not routine cleaning issues.
When your dentist refers you
Your dentist sends you to a periodontist when gum pockets are too deep to treat in a general office, when bone grafting or soft-tissue surgery is needed, or when implant placement requires a specialist's surgical training.
Why it matters
Board-certified periodontists complete an additional three years of specialty training beyond dental school. Drs. Engen and Pizzini are among only a few board-certified periodontists in the Inland Northwest.
Two doctors with rare, distinct credentials.
Dr. David W. Engen
DDS, MSD
One of only a few board-certified periodontists in the Inland Northwest, Dr. Engen also holds specialty training in orthodontics, placing him among a select few specialists nationally to hold both credentials. He is one of only three dentists in Spokane offering PerioLase® laser periodontal therapy, and he served as a clinical instructor at Indiana University in both periodontics and orthodontics. He directs the Spokane Study Club and is a past President of the Spokane District Dental Society.
Dr. Andrea Pizzini
DDS, Cert. Periodontology, MS
One of only a few board-certified periodontists in the Inland Northwest, Dr. Pizzini earned his dental degree in Madrid, Spain, completed postgraduate periodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and holds an MS in dentistry. He has lectured internationally across the United States, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic, and is a Fellow of the ICOI. Away from the practice, he is a 2019 NASTAR national ski champion and competed on the World Pro Ski Tour.
The first and only FDA-cleared laser to regenerate periodontal attachment and bone.
Dr. Engen is one of only three dentists in Spokane using the PerioLase MPV-7 for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). The laser fiber is about the width of three human hairs; it removes diseased tissue while sparing healthy tissue, often in one visit, with a quicker recovery than traditional gum surgery.
Laser targets disease
The PerioLase fiber removes infected tissue without cutting or sutures.
Bone stimulated
Ultrasonic scalers clean root surfaces; the laser stimulates new attachment.
Healing begins
Blood clot forms a natural seal. Most patients return to normal activity quickly.
